While it’s true that installing a harness won’t make your Neon any faster, it will allow you to be a better driver. If you’ve already driven with a harness you know what I mean, and if you haven’t you may have a hard time believing how much of a difference it makes. Beyond the increased safety issue, being securely belted into your car means you can spend less time and energy staying in the seat and concentrate on the issue at hand, driving. It’s not uncommon for drivers who don’t use a harness in an autocross situation to develop bruises on the legs and arms from bracing themselves against the door and dashboard. A driver that uses a harness is able to use both feet and both hands to control the car, a tremendous advantage over the person who needs to leverage the left foot through the floorboard and right knee into the dashboard while using the steering wheel to keep the upper body from flopping around.

We chose the Schroth Rallye-4 to use in our Neons over many other harnesses for several reasons. Ease of installation is our first criteria. The Schroth system requires no drilling or fabrication. It mounts to stock seatbelt locations and can be stowed easily when not in use. When we were running a different Neon every week, we installed the harness at the event and removed it that afternoon before we left. Now that the ACR is ready, a harness has been installed in both front seats. When I need to use the back seat, the tailstrap can be unlatched from the harness and stowed underneath the back seat. The stock seatbelts are not removed or inhibited, and I advise you to use them for ‘around town’ use.

The Rallye-4 is also DOT approved in the United States. No other harness that I know of can make this claim. This is important when the harness is used during SCCA rallies and on long highway trips. Once again, increased safety aside, the harness is an improvement over the stock seatbelts when it comes to comfort during these demanding conditions. The increased back support and decreased fatigue are welcome benefits when you’ve got hours to go before you rest. It’s also nice to know that when you’re stopped for a traffic violation your belts are legal in the states that require seatbelt usage.

I purchased the three harnesses I own and I’m developing a relationship with Schroth to partially fund the charity aspect of Lake Effect Racing in the future. I’m sure that Travis Robinson at Schroth would not mind answering questions and taking orders when you call. If you do decide to purchase a Schroth Restraint System, please let either myself, or Travis (1-800-884-2358) know that we may have had something to do with that decision. You may also purchase Schroth products directly from us. Send Email for special pricing information.
