Schroth Rallye-4 Harness installation
Tools Required:
Ratchet
3" extention for ratchet
15mm socket
T-50 Torx bit for ratchet
T-55 Torx bit for ratchet
Time required for installation:
10 to 30 minutes
Mechanical ability required:
Almost none, just take your time
Caution:
Do not cross-thread any of the bolts when you reinstall them. They should start easily and be hand tightened for several turns before a tool is required. If a bolt cannot be turned by hand, remove it and try again. If you ruin a bolt by crossthreading it, you have also ruined the mounting point in your car. If that happens, take your car to a reputable bodyshop to be repaired. This applies to the seat mounts as well as the seatbelt mounts.
Terminology:
Inboard - Toward center of car, the center console is Inboard
Outboard- Toward the outside of the car, the doors are Outboard
Tailstrap- The portion of the Schroth Harness that attaches to the rear seatbelt anchors
Harness- The portion of the Schroth Harness that attatches to the front seatbelt anchors
Reinstall- Torque seatbelt bolts to 40 ft-lbs. as recommended by the Schroth Instruction manual
Remove the front seat
Four bolts attach the seat to the floor of the car. Slide the seat all the way back and remove the two 15mm bolts that secure the front rails. Slide the seat all the way forward and remove the two bolts that secure the rear rails. At this point, the seat can be removed from the car.
Remove the back seat
Grasp the front of the seat cushion approximately eight inches from the outboard edge and firmly lift the cushion. Repeat the process on the other side of the car and remove the seat. Be certain to look at how the seat attaches so that youll be able to reinstall it later.
Attach the Tailstrap
The portion of the harness that secures the shoulder straps is the Tailstrap. Adjust its length so that it is near fully extended. Using the T-55 Torx bit, remove the inboard bolt that secures the rear seatbelt. Be sure that the bolt that you are removing is on the side of the car that you are installing the harness. The end of the tailstrap that does not have the length adjuster should be installed at that location. The bolt passes through the stock seatbelt hardware, and then the Schroth tailstrap hardware. The tailstrap hardware will need to be bent as the bolt is tightened down. This adjustment is discussed in the Schroth installation instructions and does not pose a safety problem.
The outboard bolt can be considerably more difficult to access, but patience and persistance will make the job easier. Locate the outboard seatbelt bolt behind the piece of plastic trim. Carefully pull the rear portion of the trim inboard and then forward to expose the bolt. The piece of trim can be captured by the slot that the stock belt passes through, making the rest of the work very easy. The trim does not need to be removed, only moved out of the way. Using the T-50 Torx bit, remove the outboard bolt that secures the rear seatbelt. Be sure that the tailstrap is not twisted and that the buckle is right-side up and push the end of the strap through the slot that the stock seatbelt passes through. Re-install the bolt, passing through the tailstrap first and then the stock seatbelt hardware. Carefully re-position the trim piece that covers the bolt.
Reinstall the rear seat cushion
Be sure that all of the seatbelts and the tailstrap are on top of the cushion as it is reinstalled. Push the back of the cushion into place. Locate the front mounting hardware on the cushion and postion it over the rubber grommet that secures it. Firmly press the hardware into the grommet on both sides of the seat.
Attach inboard harness end
Using the T-50 Torx bit, remove the bolt that secures the inboard seatbelt latch to the seat. Determine which end of the lapbelt is attached to the inboard side by laying the harness across the seat as if it were already attached. Reinstall the bolt, passing through the stock seatbelt hardware first, and then the end of the lapbelt.
At this point, it is less confusing if the seat is put back into the car, and moved as far forward as possible. The rails are not attached to the floor yet because the seat needs to be further forward than the rails allow.
Attach the outboard harness end
Using the T-50 Torx bit, remove the bolt that secures the outboard seatbelt end to the floor. Be sure that the harness is laid out as if it were already installed on the seat. The buckle should be latched and the shoulder harness should be extended up through the headrest. It is very important that the belts are not twisted at this point or you will be removing the seat again and repeating this step later. When you are certain that the belts are properly positioned, reinstall the bolt through the stock hardware, then the Schroth lapbelt end.
Reinstall the seat
Place the seat rails in their correct position, ready to be bolted to the floor. Re-check the harness to be sure that the belts are not twisted. The lap belts should not be twisted when latched together and the shoulder harness should lie flat against the seatback. Install each bolt approximately halfway to be sure that the rails are properly positioned. After all four bolts have been started, they may be tightened down.
